PURPOSE: To prevent the failure of a fiber and to improve a yield by removing the contaminated particles of a density and size larger than those of the suspended particles in sol in accordance with the characteristics thereof before this sol is gelatinized. ;CONSTITUTION: The silica base optical fiber is drawn from a preform contg. sol-gel forming glass of which the sol contains the SiO₂ suspended particles in water. In such optical fiber forming method, the contaminated particles of the density and size larger than those of the SiO₂ suspended particles included in the sol, more particularly ZrO₂ and TiO₂ particles, are removed from the sol. The settlement dependent upon the density and the filtration based on the size are useful for separating such harmful particles from the SiO₂ particles constituting the water-soluble sol. The preferable method is a method by centrifugal force which puts the water-soluble gel into a bottle 10 mounted at a rotor arm 11 connected to a rotor 12 and rotates the same, thereby separating the harmful particles as precipitate 13.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
