PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoresponsive material exhibiting good photoresponsiveness and undergoing no deteterioration by temperature or solvent, through determining the composition and synthesis conditions of such an inorganic/organic multiple compound that the reversible change of its molecular configuration by light irradiation represents the change in layer spacing. ;SOLUTION: The inorganic/organic multiple compound including azobenzene is represented by the general formula [C6H5-N=N-C6H4-OI-(CH2)j-NHn(CH3)3-n(M)1-z(MgxLiySi4O10F2) (wherein, (j), (i) and (n) are each an integer; (z), (x) and (y) are each a real number; j=1-2, i=0-1, n=0-3, z=0.1-1, x=2-2.5 and y=0-1; M is a univalent cation; and C6H5-N=NC6H5 is an organic molecular group having azobenzene structure). The other version of the inorganic/organic multiple compound including azobenzene is represented by the general formula [(CH3)3-nNHn(CH2)j-Oi-C6H4-N=N-C6H4- oi-(CH2)j-NHn(CH3)3-n]z/2 (M)1-z(MgxLiySi4O10F2) (wherein, (j), (i) and (n) are each an integer; (z), (x) and (y) are each a real number; j=1-2, i=0-1, n=0-3, z=0-1, x=2-2.5 and y=0-1; M is a univalent cation; and C6H5-N=N-C6H4 is an organic molecular group having azobenzene structure).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
