Method and apparatus for cutting a plurality of plates from a hard and brittle workpiece

The workpiece is moved through the frame of a wire saw at preset feed speed, with the frame formed by the saw wire with reciprocal motion and coated with stuck cutting chips. Under the wire frame is located a cooling liquid. Bath into which the saw wire dips during the disc cutting. The workpiece deflects the saw wire during cutting from its rest position, and its feed speed controlled in dependence on the measured deflection. The saw wire is wound on a coil via deflection pulleys. Independent claims are also included for a wire saw.
