PURPOSE: To retrieve a graphic at high speed by setting a specified partial data set in a data base to be an object. ;CONSTITUTION: At least a retrieval range deciding part B12, a retrieval range storage register B14, a retrieval processing part B15, a data storage memory B13 and an input/output interface B11 are provided. A retrieval range and data to be retrieved are inputted to the input/output interface. The retrieval range deciding part B12 decides a retrieval range address and the address is stored in a register. The retrieval processing part B15 executes retrieval by using the address, and a retrieval result is outputted from the input/output interface B11. Thus retrieval is started rather from a specified node part in an end direction rather than the root of the tree structure of the data base, only necessarily minimum retrieval is executed and speed is made high. A new two-dividing tree constructed processing is used, and speed and efficiency are made high.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
