PURPOSE: To provide a novel complex useful as a catalyst for the production of optically active cyclopropane carboxylic acid compounds and obtained from easily available raw materials under mild conditions. ;CONSTITUTION: The novel complex is produced by reacting an optically active ethylendiamine of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl; (m),(n) are 1-3; * is asymmetric carbon) with a copper compound. The complex is obtained by reacting the optically active ethylene-diamine [e.g. N, N'-bis(diphenylmethyl)-1,2- diphenylethylenediamine] with the copper compound [e.g. cupric (II) trifluoromethane sulfonate] usually in the presence of a solvent such as methylene chloride preferably at 0-35°C. The copper compound is used in an amount of 0.3-0.5 mole per mole of the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I is obtained e.g. by reacting optically active 1,2-diphenylethylene-diamine with a halide compound of formula II (X is halogen) in the presence of a base such as pyridine.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
