A process for treating a composition comprising one or more unwanted compounds and one or more desirable compounds for reducing the concentration of one or more unwanted compounds is described. The process comprises the steps of (1) contacting the composition with a solid adsorbent, (2) eluting the solid adsorbent in which the composition is retained with an extraction solvent comprising a (hydro) fluorocarbon, and (3) collecting a eluted from the solvent containing a composition having a reduced concentration of unwanted solid adsorbent compounds. The process is especially suitable for reducing terpene content in an essential oil.
