"Use of Inorganic Nanoparticles to Modify Viscosity and Other Physical Properties of Pharmaceutical and Optical Compositions". The present invention relates to the use of nanoparticles of inorganic materials (e.g. synthetic smectite clays) in ophthalmic and optical pharmaceutical compositions. Nanoparticles are used to modify the rheological properties of the compositions to increase viscosity, flow characteristics, lubricity or other characteristics of the compositions. The invention is particularly directed to the provision of eye and ear lubricant compositions and to increase the viscosity, shear thinning and lubricity of artificial teardrop compositions.
