The present invention relates to a method and a system for authentication of an item, specifically a document, in particular a security document, wherein the authentication method comprises the steps of: a) exposing the marking to electromagnetic radiation and/or magnetic characteristics emitted by a communication equipment; b) detecting at least part of the electromagnetic radiation and/or magnetic characteristics emitted by the marking in said communication equipment; and/or c) detecting a change in the electromagnetic radiation and/or any of the parameters of the magnetic characteristics emitted by the communication equipment. The invented method further comprises provisional steps of loading a measuring and verification algorithm from a remote server or a database into memory devices of a mobile communication device, loading of reference data from a remote server or a database into memory devices of a mobile communication device whereby the generation of a detected response signal by a device for verification of the authenticity of the data being verified is carried out through the mediation of starting the measuring algorithm through a data processing equipment and the verification of the detected response signal using the mobile communication device is carried out by starting the verification algorithm and using the reference data by the data processing equipment and generation of an output signal representing the result of the authenticity verification. The invention also relates to a unit and a system for the authentication of a security document.
