A biomass is pyrolysed to form a liquid (A) which is then subjected to a high temperature thermal cracking step. A process for preparing synthesis gas (B) comprises the following steps: (a) pyrolysis of a biomass to form a liquid containing at least 25 vol.% organic compounds and maximum 70 vol.% water; and (b) subjecting the liquid to a thermal cracking step at a minimum temperature of 900[deg]C in order to form synthesis gas.
