The system is for the protection of optical sound carriers against illegal duplication frequently carried out by individuals or groups of people using a computer and appropriate software to copy multimedia, film and sound material. It involves the information carrier (3) destined for sale being provided with a unique information characteristic. The information carrier can be a CD or a CD ROM on which music or film material is recorded. This characteristic is generated by special devices (1) and with the aid of further equipment (2) is permanently applied to each information carrier. The unique characteristics are always stored in an electronic data bank (5) coupled to a control system stored on data storage devices of a control computer. The legal owner of an original information carrier can always on the basis of the unique characteristic obtain access to the data bank and store in it all kinds of information characteristics concerning their identity and similar. This guarantees a personal registration of the original information carrier. On an approach by another user (4) with the aid of the same information characteristic, using his or her own control computer via the data communication network (6), the processing equipment of the control computer (5) will directly establish that the information characteristic fed in by the other user is already registered in the data bank and that this second approach is with a view to copying the original information carrier.
