Organ arrest, protection and preservation using a potassium channel operator and/or adenosine receptor and a local anaesthetic

The use of a composition for arresting, protecting and or preserving an organ. The organ may include a heart, and may be an organ originating from the circulation, respiratory, urinary, digestive, reproductive and neurological systems. The composition includes: a) either or both a potassium channel opener or agonist, and an adenosine receptor agonist, and b) a local anaesthetic. The potassium channel opener or agonist may include the following: Nicorandil, diaoxide, minoxidil, filodipine, verapamil, pimiozide, and nimodipine. The adenosine receptor agonist may include: N6-cyclopentyladenosine, N-ethylcarboxamido adenosine and 2- chloroadenosine. The local anaethetic may include the following: Mexiletine, class 1B antiarrhythmic agent such as lignocaine, prilocaine, and mipivacaine.
