Initiation of oestrus in early postpartum mammals by the adminstration of prostaglandin followed by progesterone

A method of initiating oestrus or increasing milk production in a female mammal, preferably a diary cow, comprises supplying a prostaglandin or prostaglandin analogue early post partum and subsequently treating with a progesterone or progesterone equivalent. The prostaglandin analogue is preferably cloprostenol, dinoprost, tiaprost, luprostiol or etiproston tromethamine and the progesterone equivalent is preferably flugestone acteate, medroxyprogesteron acetate, altrenogest or norgestamet.
