Electronic shopping or discount coupons can be stored in a mobile device such as a mobile phone or PDA. When the person going shopping purchases items the identification codes of the purchased items are read at the payment terminal in the shop and either the list of coupons stored in the mobile is transmitted to the payment terminal or the list of purchased items is transmitted to the mobile. Either way the list of coupons is compared to the list of purchased items and if any item is identified for which the mobile holds a corresponding coupon, the discount in accordance with the coupon information can be deducted from the total purchase price.
