METHOD FOR SEPARATING TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT IN POSTMORTEM DISSECTION

The method for separating the temporomandibular joint in postmortem dissection is performed as follows: The soft tissues are separated from the temporal bone, the zygomatic arch, and the process of the mandible. The process of the mandible is cut inferior to the site of the attachment of the articular capsule using the bone forceps. The muscles and the ligaments from the side of the base of skull are cut. The zygomatic arch is fragmented. The hole in the bottom of the middle cranial fossa is drilled ahead of the oval foramen and the bones of the bottom of the middle cranial fossa are sawn with the wire saw before, laterally and behind the area of projection of the upper part of the joint. The fragment of the bottom of the middle cranial fossa is broken away by the gouge and the separated joint is removed. The zygomatic arch is fragmented by the bone forceps. Then the lateral part of the pyramid is broken away by the gouge and the access to the tympanic membrane is open. Upon drilling the hole in the bottom of the middle cranial fossa the tympanic membrane is perforated and the hole in the lower wall of the external acoustic meatus is drilled.
