The surface layer comprises a coating with a thickness of 1-1000 nm on a flat sensor surface and the binding ability is quantified in an aqueous medium or organic solvent using surface-sensitive techniques such as quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), optical techniques such as infra-red spectroscopy, ellipsometry or surface plasma resonance.
