The communications system comprises a connection-oriented communications network, a data packet-oriented communications network, and a common database (20). The connection-oriented network contains a dedicated communication channel associated with a communication terminal (18), and includes a first service regulator for treating a first telecommunication service request associated with the channel. In the data packet-oriented network the packet associated with a packet-oriented communication is guided to and from the communication terminal via this network on a packet-for-packet basis, and the network includes a second service regulator for treating a telecommunication service request associated with the packet-oriented communication. The database stores data associated with the user or services in both the connection and data packet- oriented networks, and is used by both service regulators during treatment of the telecommunications service requests. Independent claims are also included for (a) a common database contactable by intelligent nodes (14, 26) in circuit and packet-switched networks (12, 22) for intelligent network (IN) services, and (b) communication methods using these systems.
