Individually openable hatches (5) are used to cover the basin (2) on either side of walkways (3), insulating the water inside against heat or cold, and blocking out light. A method for handling all types of different materials, such as sewage or rainwater, comprises collecting and treating the e.g. water in large indoor or outdoor basins, above which are walkways for personnel to use during handling and checking of the water inside the basin. The basin is covered with hatches to the side of the walkway, either before or during the addition of water. The hatch material is inert to water and any additives present, prevents evaporation or condensation of water inside the basin, prevents light from reaching the water, and insulates the water against heat and cold. One or more individual hatches can be opened so that a treatment agent can be added, or so that the process can be checked, e.g. for sedimentation, precipitation in the water or checking water purity. The walkways are covered with a rubber or plastic material (6) which is inert to water and additives in it. An Independent claim is also included for the process apparatus used to carry out this method.
