Colour measurement system used in multicolour printing presses for e.g. newspapers

Grey reference surfaces are used, one being that obtained using cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) inks, and the other comprising only the black ink and white paper substrate. The grey surfaces are illuminated and a colour-sensitive sensor analyses the reflected light, and the composition of CMY ink components is altered until the colours of the two reference surfaces match.
