Method for composting liquid sludge, comprising pumping sludge via hoses (2) into a bed of distribution material (6) containing worms and removing seepage water via a filter system (8-10). Compost is deposited by the worms above a perforated partition wall above the bed. A method for composting liquid sludge in a thermal composting bed comprises: (1) providing a surface-disturbing and capillary-breaking distribution material containing a worm population in a partially perforated vessel ; (2) adding liquid sludge to the vessel via pipes or hoses; (3) removing seepage water via a filter system containing a heating loop and located beneath a perforated base used to support the distribution material ; and (4) applying a perforated partition wall onto the distribution material, the perforations being large enough to worms to crawl through and deposit the degraded sludge material above the wall. An Independent claim is also included for the composting apparatus, in which a pipe or hose network is used to pump sludge into one or more levels in the distribution material bed.
