Reference partial areas from known stored prints are compared with slightly larger current partial areas in different positions in an unknown print until a match is found. The comparison begins with a reference partial area centered on the current unknown partial area and the reference area is moved in a spiral towards the edge of the current area. When a thresholded match is found a likeness is assumed and another partial area of the print is examined. His is repeated until a given number of partial areas are matched when identification is assumed. An Independent claim is included for a device for identifying a fingerprint.
