The exhaust gas recycling system in a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine (2) involves cylinders (14) into which homogeneous fuel-air mixture is aspirated and suitably compressed for self-ignition when the piston is in the top dead center position. For each cylinder in the cylinder head is a specially controlled exhaust gas recycling valve (28') for controlling an exhaust gas part flow through an appropriate connection (30,30') between the combustion chamber and an exhaust recycling accumulator (32,34). The exhaust gas recycling valve is controlled so that in the expansion stroke, it opens and allows high pressure exhaust gas to flow from the combustion chamber to fill the exhaust recycling accumulators. Also, partly, when the suction valves are closed, it opens and allows feed-back from the exhaust gas recycling accumulators to the combustion chamber.
