The rack cross member has a generally rectangular hollow profile formed by the bending of a sheet metal strip. The edge sections of the strip forming the lower wall section of the profile are unconnected and lie in one plane, thereby forming a slot. The two vertical wall sections of the profile each have a channel in the form of a trough recessed in the direction of the inside of the profile and with end sections pointing outwards at an angle. The channels occupy a substantial part of the height of the vertical wall sections.
