An Independent claim is also included for a device for smelting metal oxide-containing materials, especially for the production of pig iron and/or pig iron pre-products made from iron oxide-containing materials comprising a gas source (1) for producing a generator gas, a reducing unit (12) for reducing the metal oxide-containing material, especially iron ore, and a line (7) for partially deviating top gas from the reducing unit. Gas cleaning devices (9,10,11) are arranged after the gas source.
