Method for the identification of Verticillium dahliae defoliant and non-defoliant cotton patotypes by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis or specific polymerase chain reaction. The method comprises a) extracting the V. dahliae DNA to be typed, b) amplifying the extracted DNA by (i) a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPDPCR) in the presence of random primers, or (ii) by a specific PCR in the presence of a pair of specific initiators for each pathotype and c) separating the amplified products by electrophoresis to determine the presence of DNA bands identifying the cotton D or ND patotypes of V. dahliae. The method has utility in the identification of the defoliant and non-defoliant V. dahliae patotypes and in the efficient application of control measures of the Verticilosis.
