The sodium-niobium-tungsten-oxygen system protonic solid electrolyte comprises a product based on the compound NaNbWO6, of composition Na1-xHxNbWO6 where x is 0 to ca. 0.5. The aqueous-acid-medium treatment replaces the sodium by topotactic proton, and the ion conductivity of the products in a high relative humidity increases from ambient temperature to 90 degreesC. The electrolyte is not suitable for use at above 170 degreesC.
