A method for controlling a transmission (14) power of a vehicle driven by a motor, having the transmission (14) a clutch (20, 22, 24) actuated by fluid pressure to control the flow of torque through transmission (14), said clutch (20, 22, 24) discharged during a load change of the transmission (14), and a valve (26, 28, 30) pressure control being to control the fluid pressure communicated to the clutch (20, 22, 24) in response to a current control valve applied to an input thereof, having the clutch (20, 22, 24) an input element and an output element, the method comprising : detecting a load on the engine (10); depending on the detected load, determining a slip pressure, which when applied to said clutch (20, 22, 24) cause said clutch (20, 22, 24) to slide; applying said slip pressure to said clutch (20, 22, 24); detecting rotation speeds of both sides of said clutch (20, 22, 24) while said clutch (20, 22, 24) is transmitting torque therethrough; if said clutch (20, 22, 24) is not slipping, reducing pressure applied to said clutch (20, 22, 24) until relative rotation (slip) between the elements and out of said clutch is detected (20 , 22, 24); determining the actual torque load present in said transmission (14) as a function of slip pressure to said clutch (20, 22, 24) begins to slide; determining a pressure increase, which when applied to said clutch (20, 22, 24) slide to allow said clutch (20, 22, 24) sliding further slippage while transmitting the same torque it was transmitting before starting to slide; and applying said determined pressure increase to said clutch (20, 22, 24) slide.
