Apparatus for determining the speed of sound of a gas, comprising: a basically spherical resonator to contain the gas to be checked; an acoustic transmitter to apply an acoustic signal to the inside of the resonator; an acoustic receiver to detect the amplitude of the acoustic signal inside the resonator; and a control means for determining the speed of sound of a gas within the resonator from the frequency in a detected resonant mode; wherein the resonant mode detected is a non-radial resonant mode and the internal radius of the resonator is basically 5 cm or less.
