The development zircon-based high-degradation-resistance materials comprises heat treatment at 1500-1700 degrees C for over 30 minutes in nitrogen or under vacuum of conventional Y-TZP (tetragonal zircon stabilized with 2.5 molar per cent of Y2O3). The Y-TZP is in contact with uniformly distributed powdered fine AlN yielding a below 1.5 mm surface layer Al2O3. The materials resist moisture attack at 25-500 degrees C.
