A multi-function lance for use in a vacuum degassing chamber, comprising an inner cylindrical water-cooled upper blow passage (18) that provides a gaseous oxygen path (3) formed with a nozzle (2) provided in a downstream end of said oxygen path (3) and used to blow oxygen on a molten metal; a water-cooled jacket (19) surrounding the outer periphery of said inner upper blow passage (18); at least one set of paths (7, 8) for a fluid fuel (22) and a gas (23) for burning the fuel (22) surrounded by said water-cooled jacket (19); and a combustion burner (6) provided at a downstream end of said paths (7, 8) characterized in that said inner passage (18) is provided with an opening (4 '') having a transparent plate (4) that it is provided axially in the center of said inner passage (18) and a sensor (5) is provided to detect the flame through the opening (4 '') and through said inner passage (18).
