HEMICELLULASE SUPPLEMENT TO IMPROVE THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF HEMICELLULOSE-CONTAINING FOOD AND ANIMAL FEED

Soil microorganismsare obtained that produce ahemicellulase which isparticularly useful in increasingthe available energy content ofhemicellulosic foodstuffs.These microorganisms can becultured per se or can be usedas sources of geneticinformation with which to engineerother microorganisms toproduce the enzyme. Thus,commercially useful quantities ofnative or recombinanthemicellulase can be producedwith cultures consistingessentially of microorganismsthat produce the enzyme. Thehemicellulase, a culture consistingessentially of a microorganismthat produces such ahemicellulase, or a fermentation brothcomprised of such a cultureand hemicellulase can then beemployed in a consumablecomposition containing complexcarbohydrates which the enzyme degrades, enhancing the nutritional value ofthe composition.
