DYNAMIC LOAD BALANCING DURING MESSAGE PROCESSING IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SERVICE NETWORK

A wireless communication network includes at least two programmableapplication processors (APs) for message processing. Each AP runs one or moreactiveradio control software (RCS) instances on behalf of a defined cell group andone or morestandby RCS instances on behalf of at least one other cell group. Each cell inthenetwork is connected to a pair of APs. One AP runs an active RCS instance onbehalf ofthe cell and the other AP runs a standby RCS instance on behalf of the cell.What isdisclosed is a system and method for performing dynamic load balancing duringsystemoperation between a pair of APs (AP pair) serving at least one cell in common.In a firststep, selection is made, relative to at least one cell served by the AP pair,of a first RCSinstance running as an active RCS instance on one member of the AP pair and asecondRCS instance running as a standby RCS instance on the other member of the APpair.The first RCS instance is redesignated as a standby RCS instance for the celland thesecond RCS instance is redesignated as an active RCS instance for the cell.Activemessage processing is then transferred from the first RCS instance to thesecond RCSinstance during network operation and without service interruption to thecell. In avariation the foregoing, an entire group of RCS instances (active or standby)can bemoved from one AP to another. Also disclosed is a distributed mated-pairprocessorarrangement in which the standby RCS instances for a cell group aredistributed acrossmultiple APs.
