The amplitude controlled optical signal has a phase shifter (1) which returns a non-linear phase dependent on the intensity of the input signal. The incoming signal is not attenuated. The output signal from the phase shifters is passed to an optical amplifier (2) which retains the signal phase using pump beam interaction. An amplifier function, modulation inversion or production of a noise free light beam can be output.
