A spectrochemical analysis device and method used for high time-resolution measurement without need for precise alignment for optical parts and a specimen. The method comprises the steps of (1) forming interference fringes of a pulse pumping light (51) by using a diffraction grating (2), (2) illuminating a specimen (6) with the interference fringes of the pumping light (51) to form interference fringes on the specimen (6), (3) illuminating the specimen (6) where the interference fringes of the pumping light (51) are formed with a pulse probe light, and (4) detecting mixed light of the probe light (modulated light) diffracted by the interference fringes of the specimen (6) and the probe light (nonmodulated light) not diffracted by the interference fringes by means of a detector (41). By using the mixed light of the modulated and nonmodulated lights, a variation of the amplitude or phase of a modulated light can be detected with high accuracy. According to the results of the detection, the characteristics of the specimen can be analyzed.
