A radio transmitting/receiving apparatus uses, on the transmitter, pilot symbols that are M-chip spread on the frequency axis and N-chip spread on the time axis by use of spread codes of M times N chips length (where M and N are any integers greater than one), and further uses, on the receiver, spread codes, which are not used for spreading the pilot signals, as despread codes to despread a received signal to estimate nose and interference power, thereby performing a code assignment such that the spread codes used for spreading the pilot symbols are orthogonal to the despread codes used for the despread even with respect to only the N chips on the time axis.
