The interactive system has a large-screen display device (5) on which a game or event is displayed in view of the mass event participants (2), connected as a peripheral device to a central computer (4) or computer cluster (4'), together with mobile telephones or personal digital assistants carried by the participants, which are coupled to the central computer or computer cluster via radio or IR links (3). The computer responds to inputs provided by the participants via their mobile telephones or personal digital assistants for controlling the representation of the game or event provided by the display device. Statistical averaging of user inputs may be used in evaluating a group response.
