PURPOSE: A microorganism having iron-oxidation activity and a method for leaching of heavy metals using the same are provided. The microorganism can oxidize iron under high concentration of heavy metals, so that metals can be easily eluted from the sulfide-type heavy metal sludge. CONSTITUTION: A microorganism Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans GM1(KCCM-10383) having iron-oxidation activity is provided, wherein Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans GM1(KCCM-10383) is isolated by collecting water staying in unworked mine, culturing the water sample on a iron-oxidizing microorganism selection medium, and isolating colonies showing red-brown. A method for eluting heavy metals comprises using Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans GM1(KCCM-10383) having iron-oxidation activity, wherein Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans GM1(KCCM-10383) oxidizes Fe+2 to Fe+3, so that insoluble sulfide-type heavy metals can be effectively changed to soluble type heavy metals.
