Video player having parental lock function and method for controlling the same

PURPOSE: An apparatus for playing video with a user rating function and a method for controlling the same are provided to leave contents related to play of a video recording medium on record to confirm the record afterwards, thereby inducing inappropriate users to abandon watching. CONSTITUTION: A data reading unit reads user restricting rate data from a video recording medium(S310-S320). A control unit controls the on screen display(OSD) to output a message requesting a user to input the password if the user restricting rate of the video recording medium is higher than a user restricting rate level set in a previous device(S330-S340). If the password inputted through the input unit is coincided with a password previously set, the control unit stores the contents related to play in the memory unit(S350-S360). If a play command is inputted, play data and time are recorded on a memory unit(S370-S380). If the password inputted through the input unit is not coincided with a password previously set, the control unit controls to output a viewing impossible message(S355).
