PURPOSE: Provided is a liquid crystal medium, which has a broad operation range, high specific resistance, short response time even at low temperature and low critical voltage, and gives a matrix liquid crystal display device having excellent chemical and thermal stability, electroconductivity, and dielectric and optical anisotropic properties. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal medium is based on a mixture of polar compounds comprising at least one compound represented by the following formula 1. In formula 1, R1 is a C1-C12 alkyl radical non-substituted, mono-substituted with CN or CF3, or mono- or higher-substituted with halogens, wherein at least one CH2 group of the above radical may be independently substituted with a selected divalent group so as not to make a direct bond between O atoms; each of L1-L6 independently represents H or F; each of Z1 and Z2 independently represents -COO- or -CF2O- (wherein Z1 is different from Z2); X is F, Cl, CN, OCN, NCS, SCN, SF5, a C5 or lower non-substituted alkyl or alkoxy radical, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical; u is 1 or 2; and v is 1 or 2.
