PURPOSE: A system for detecting a lightning position and a failure position of an overhead transmission line is provided to improve the detecting accuracy of the failure position by detecting a lightning current and a failure current at each of transmission steel tower. CONSTITUTION: When a lightning current is introduced from an overhead wire(22) or a conductor of an overhead transmission line to a transmission steel tower, it is discharged through a steel tower main member(21). Then, a current transformer(23) installed at the steel tower main member(21) detects the lightning current or a failure current. A level detector(24) is used for detecting an instantaneous value of the lightning current greater than a saturation point of the current transformer(23). A maximum value detector(25) detects a maximum instantaneous value. A surge/failure current determining unit(26) discriminates a surge waveform from a utility power frequency waveform to input the discrimination result to a CPU(Central Processing Unit)(27). The CPU(27) receives the instantaneous value, the maximum instantaneous value, and the discrimination result and transmits them to a center equipment through an RF(Radio Frequency) module(28) together with an identification number assigned by a dip switch(29).
