PURPOSE: Provided is a cermet material with substantially improved wear resistance while maintaining toughness and resistance to plastic deformation on the same level as state-of-the-art cermets. CONSTITUTION: In a titanium based carbo nitride alloy for general finishing operation comprising hard constituents with undissolved Ti(C,N) cores (A) and containing Ti, Nb, W, C, N and Co, the alloy further comprises 9 to 16 at.% of Co, 4 to 7 at.% of Nb, 3 to 8 at.% of W, C and N having a C/(N+C) ratio of 0.50 to 0.75, and Ni and Fe as impurities except Ti, wherein an amount of undissolved Ti(C,N) cores is 26 to 37 vol.% of the hard constituents and the balance being one or more complex carbo nitride phases (B), wherein the alloy contains 9 to less than 12 at.% of Co, preferably contains 9 to less than 10.5 at.% of Co, wherein the alloy contains 12 to 16 at.% of Co, preferably contains 12 to 14.5 at.% of Co, wherein the alloy contains 4 to 5.5 at.% of Nb, wherein the alloy contains 3 to 4 at.% of W, and wherein the amount of undissolved Ti(C,N) cores is 27 to 35 vol.% of the hard constituents, the balance being one or more complex carbo nitride phases.
