An optical element for a display unit comprising a first rigid, transparent plate ( 9 b) and at least one flexible optical foil ( 5 ), wherein the foil ( 5 ) is held to the plate ( 9 b) by means of an underpressure created, for example, by a suction device ( 17 ). The optical element according to the invention overcomes the problem of wrinkling foils by creating an underpressure that presses the foil ( 5 ) against the rigid plate ( 9 b), thereby preventing the foil from wrinkling. According to an embodiment of the invention, the optical element further comprises a second rigid, transparent plate ( 9 a), said optical foil is arranged between the first and second plates, and the plates ( 9 a, 9 b) are held together by means of underpressure.
