PURPOSE: To provide a method for modifying native and expandable phyllosilicates, especially native vermiculite, to have an increased expansion volume and enable the modification of the onset temperature by the intercalation of intercalate compounds. CONSTITUTION: The method is characterized in that a native phyllosilicate is ion-exchanged with at least one cationic surfactant and, at the same time or in a further step, at least one organic intercalate compound is intercalated in the phyllosilicate, provided that dimethylformamide, chloroform, dimethylacetamide, toluene and dimethylsulfoxide could be intercalated without a prior ion exchange. The phyllosilicate-intercalation compound prepared by the method is used as an intumescence material, which can be used as an intumescing, fire-retarding additive and/or in expanded form as an additive for producing fire-retarding materials, as well as for producing high temperature-resistant insulation panels and seals, especially for the fire-preventing sealing of through holes, wall bushings and other openings in walls, floors and/or ceilings of buildings.
