PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for measuring a speed of an ultrasonic wave are provided to stably measure the speed of the ultrasonic wave regardless of a high temperature and a contamination. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for measuring a speed of an ultrasonic wave includes a laser source(7), a condensing lens(9), a non-contact type ultrasonic sensor(8), and a signal processing section(6). The laser source(7) is installed at an outer portion of a roll oil pipe in order to generate a pulse laser beam. The condensing lens(9) collects the pulse laser beam, thereby generating an ultrasonic wave(5). The non-contact type ultrasonic sensor(8) is installed at an outer portion of the roll oil pipe(1) in opposition to the laser source(7) in order to detect the ultrasonic wave(5). The signal processing section(6) calculates the speed of the ultrasonic wave(5).
