PURPOSE: An apparatus for displaying a stereoscopic image is provided to selectively display a two-dimensional image or a stereoscopic image with a high display quality and to select the two-dimensional image or the stereoscopic image with a high speed. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for displaying a stereoscopic image includes an image display device having a plurality of pixels for ejecting an image light having a polarization. A lens array(6) is formed on the image display device, and acts on the light having a first polarization direction as a lens. The lens array(6) does not act on the light having a second polarization direction as the lens. A birefringence phase modulation device is formed between the image display device and the lens array(6). The birefringence phase modulation device rotates a polarization plane(2).
