PURPOSE: A method for extracting/matching a ridge number information on a fingerprint recognition system is provided to extract the ridge number information, which is a feature value independent to the rotation, the transition, and the resolution change of a fingerprint image, and perform fingerprint matching by using the extracted information. CONSTITUTION: A virtual line connecting the first minutia and the second minutia is generated(303). Labeling is performed at the first and the second minutia by following a ridge(305). The virtual line is divided into segments(307). The segment is selected from the segments in a sequential order(311). It is checked that the selected segment is labeled by examining a pixel value(315). In case that the segment is not labeled, it is judged that the segment is the ridge by examining the pixel value(317). In the case of the ridge, the coordinates of a segment position is decided as an intersecting point and a ridge number is increased(319). After completely examining all segments, all labels are removed and the accumulated ridge number is decided as the ridge number existing between two minutiae(329).
