PURPOSE: A method for performing a handover process in a base station of a wideband wireless access communication system and a method therefor are provided to perform a handover process without carrying out an initial ranging process with a new base station, thereby reducing a transceiving interruption time of data. CONSTITUTION: A serving base station transmits a DL(Downlink)_MAP message and a UL(Uplink)_MAP message to a user terminal(1100,1102), and receives a handover request message(1104). The serving base station arrays CINRs for peripheral base stations included in the handover request message(1106), and transmits a handover connection request message to a peripheral base station having the biggest CINR(1108). The serving base station receives a handover connection response message from the peripheral base station(1110), and decides whether the peripheral base station can support a handover process(1112). If so, the serving base station transmits a handover connection confirm message to the peripheral base station(1116), and transmits a handover response message to the user terminal(1118). The serving base station cancels a link connected with the user terminal(1120).
