PURPOSE: A color separation unit and a projection type image display device adopting the same are provided to illuminate a color light of high efficiency as compacting an optical system by improving a structure of scrolling color lights separated by the color separation unit. CONSTITUTION: At least one light source(60) generates a light and radiates it. A color separation unit(70) separates a light incident from the light source into a plurality of color lights, and makes at least one color light and the other color lights be polarized with different polarizations. A plurality of light valves forms an image by controlling at least one color light among the plurality of color lights separated by the color separation unit in a pixel unit according to each input image signal. And an image combiner integrates the image generated by the plurality of light valves.
