PURPOSE: A method of preparing a functional food composition containing herbal material for improving liver function and treating liver disease is provided. The food composition produces no toxic side effects on the human body and is effective in improving liver function and treating liver disease by supplying nutrients necessary for the liver, improving blood circulation and preventing chronic fatigue. CONSTITUTION: The food composition contains: on a dry basis, a water extract of 10 to 30% by weight of Astragali Radix, 5 to 15% by weight of Codonopsis pilosula, 2 to 10% by weight of Glycyrrhizae Radix, 10 to 30% by weight of Polygonati Rhizoma, 0.1 to 5% by weight of Menthae Herba, 1 to 5% by weight of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba and 5 to 15% by weight of Chrysanthemum morifolium; 10 to 30% by weight of an ethanol extract of Schizandrae Fructus and 5 to 20% by weight of an ethanol extract of Lycii Cortex Radicis; and 5 to 15% by weight of Poria cocos powder. The composition is formulated into the shape of a tablet, capsule, pill, granule or liquid formulation.
