PURPOSE: A self-control traveling system for expressway and a method for controlling the same are provided to drastically reduce the driving fatigue in the expressway by improving the convenience of the driver. CONSTITUTION: A self-control traveling system for expressway includes a plurality of roadside sign(100), a charge coupled device(CCD) camera(200), an image process unit(300), a storage unit(400), a discrimination unit(500) and a controller(600). The roadside sign(100) are sequentially installed on the right roadside or the left roadside of the expressway. The CCD camera(200) takes photograph of the roadside sign(100). The image process unit(300) analyzes the contents in the photographed roadside sign board(100). The storage unit(400) stores the map information of the expressway. The discrimination unit(500) determines the current position and the state of the expressway by comparing the analyzed information from the image process unit(300) with the map information in the storage unit(400). And, the controller(600) performs all control related to steering, deceleration, acceleration or the like in response to the determination result from the discrimination unit(500).
