PURPOSE: To provide an austenitic stainless steel which not only improves creep strength and creep rupture ductility, but also substantially improves hot workability, particularly ductility at a high temperature of 1200 deg.C or more. CONSTITUTION: The austenitic stainless steel comprises more than 0.05 mass% to not more than 0.15 mass% of C, 2 mass% or less of Si, 0.1 to 3 mass% of Mn, 0.04 mass% or less of P, 0.01 mass% or less of S, more than 20 mass% to less than 28 mass% of Cr, more than 15 mass% to not more than 55 mass% of Ni, more than 2 mass% to not more than 6 mass% of Cu, 0.1 to 0.8 mass% of Nb, 0.02 to 1.5 mass% of V, 0.001 to 0.1 mass% of soluble Al, more than 0.05 mass% to not more than 0.3 mass% of N, 0.006 mass% or less of O, and the balance of Fe and impurities and satisfies the following expressions 1 to 3: £Expression 1|P=1/(11xCu), £Expression 2|Soluble Al=0.4xN, £Expression 3|O=1/(60xCu) where each element symbol in the expressions 1 to 3 means the content(mass%) of each element.
